Major General Patrick Brandy Visits South San Antonio ISD for Medal of Honor Celebration

On Wednesday, October 2, South San Antonio ISD proudly participated in the 2024 Congressional Medal of Honor Convention & Celebration where an assembly was held at Roy P. Benavidez Elementary School, to celebrate Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Major General Patrick Brady. The Medal of Honor is awarded by the President of the United States for individuals of the Armed Services who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, risking their own life while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States.

At 9:30 AM, Major General Brady was welcomed by the Patriot Cheer team and the South San Antonio High School Bobcat Drumline, firing up the audience and creating an energetic environment. Students, staff, and spokespeople of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society were met with lively music as the South San Antonio High School Mariachi Band performed a variety of songs before the assembly began. With the roaring sound of the drums, the audience was more than ready to hear Major General Brady’s speech and his journey to becoming a recipient of the highest honor.

Major General Brady was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Nixon on October 9, 1969, for his actions while serving as a helicopter pilot during a mission in Vietnam on January 6, 1968. On multiple occasions then, Major Brady risked his life to evacuate 51 wounded soldiers, while using 3 different helicopters after 2 were damaged by enemy fire. Throughout his time in the military, he discovered a friendship and brotherhood with Roy P. Benavidez. SSAISD was also honored to have Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez's son and grandson, Mr. Noel and Matthew Benavidez joined us today and visited the very campus he’s named after.

During his address, fourth and fifth grade students had the unique opportunity to ask Major General Brady’s questions about his military experiences, covering topics from personal life and school guidance to stories from his time in service. As he offers advice to students, Major General Brady reflects on his friendship with Roy Benavidez and his character. “Roy’s courage is what made him stand out from the rest,” stated Brady. “Courage is key to success in life, and you can be as successful as you want if you have the courage to be.”

In addition, Major General Brady emphasized to students the importance of utilizing the free resources offered at our campuses. While sharing details of his personal story, he reflects on what he would've changed if he could go back in time, and hopes these students can learn from his choices. “By the time I was in ninth grade, I had attended different schools. I didn’t take advantage of my school’s resources, and now looking back, I realized how much it could’ve helped me get further in life at a younger age,” exclaimed Brady. “I encourage you to take full advantage of the resources you have, and you’ll notice the positive impact it will make.”

Major General Patrick Brady's congressional visit to South San Antonio ISD was not just a celebration of military honor but also an inspiring lesson for our students. The enthusiasm displayed by students during this event showcased their eagerness to learn and grow from such exceptional role models. SSAISD extends our heartfelt gratitude to Major General Brady for his service and wisdom that will resonate with our students long after this event.
