South San Antonio High School Junior Receives Legacy Scholarship from San Antonio Area Foundation

South San Antonio ISD (SSAISD) is proud to announce that a South San Antonio High School (SSAHS) Junior student has recently been awarded the Legacy Scholarship from the San Antonio Area Foundation (SAAF).

Aaralyn Alvarado will receive a scholarship of $10,000 a year for her undergraduate career, up to $40,000 in total.

She plans to study Marine Biology and attain a Bachelor's degree in Marine Sciences.

“When I was really young, I used to love watching shark videos online, and the whole thing kind of kept going as I grew older,” she said. “It makes me sad to see things happening in the ocean like pollution and overfishing, so I really want to help with that and it's something that I’m passionate about.”

Alvarado plans to attend school in Galveston or Corpus Christi as both cities are along the coast, which will allow her greater opportunities to study using real-world experiences.

The SAAF Legacy Scholarship awards 50 students from Bexar and Webb counties. The eligibility requirements set forth by the donor are straight-forward: Applicants must be high school juniors living in Bexar and Webb counties with proven leadership qualities, demonstrated community involvement and a competitive transcript. Scholarship students must attend a Texas college or university, public or private. There is no income requirement to be eligible for the scholarship.

Since its first scholarship award in 1969, SAAF has awarded over $37 million to college-going students from more than 100 scholarship funds to help them achieve their educational dreams.

Congratulations Aaralyn! What a way to represent South San Antonio ISD!
