South San ISD Summer lunch program serves up healthy offerings

As you walk down the hallways of Benavidez Elementary School towards the cafeteria, the delicious smell will take you to your final destination. Wednesday’s menu included beef and mac, green beans, sliced apples, carrots and milk.

The South San ISD Summer lunch program serves healthy free meals Monday through Friday. Food Service Manager Irene Martinez says approximately 305 meals a day are served at Benavidez E-S alone.

“A lot of kids here don’t have a lot of food and necessities, so we offer breakfast and lunch,” said Martinez. “Nobody will ever be turned away.”

Some of the offerings include cereal, pancakes and donuts for breakfast, as well as hamburgers, tatertots and a popular favorite.

“On pizza day, they love it,” Martinez said. “They can smell it through the front door and they know exactly what they’re going to have.”

The Summer feeding program will continue through July 2nd at Shepard and Zamora Middle Schools, Benavidez, Five Palms and Price Elementary Schools and South San High School.

Anyone under the age of 18 is eligible for the free meals. Breakfast is served from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and lunch is offered from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Martinez has worked in the South San ISD Food Services Department for 26 years and enjoys her job.

“I love to see the children come and eat,” Martinez added. “They love the food.”
