SSAISD Board Names Superintendent Lone Finalist

The South San Antonio Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name Dr. Alexandro (Alex) M. Flores the Lone Finalist for the district’s superintendent position.

Dr. Flores has been serving as the Superintendent of Schools with Palacios Independent School District since 2015 where he supports four campuses and approximately 1,400 racially and economically diverse students.

Dr. Flores helped PISD effectively navigate the loss of approximately 12% of their annual budget due to the elimination of the Additional State Aid for Tax Reduction (ASATR) funding by developing and implementing a 3-year financial contingency plan, successfully lobbying at the state level for the approval of a hardship grant for ASATR-impacted districts, and by securing a $600 million Tax Abatement Agreement with Formosa Plastics. Additionally, PISD became a District of Innovation and expanded access to curricular options for secondary students.

The state requires a 21-day waiting period after which Trustees are expected to offer Dr. Flores a contract for employment.

“I’m ecstatic for the opportunity. It is just a great district to help lead and take to the next level,” said Dr. Flores after being named the Lone Finalist. He added, “Everybody knows that the future of public education is changing, so now it is about adapting and offering parents choices. And this is exactly the vision that South San has.”

Dr. Alex Flores has been recognized throughout his career for improving student achievement. He has implemented measures that have led to increased passing rates and higher achievement scores.

Prior to his role in Palacios ISD, Flores served as the Assistant Superintendent of Academic Pupil Services for the Natalia Independent School District which included serving a term as the Interim Superintendent of Schools during 2014-2015. During Flores’ time in Natalia ISD the district improved academic performance and Met Standard after being labeled Improvement Required the prior year.

Board President Angelina Osteguin said the district quickly narrowed the field of candidates to five potential superintendents. “Dr. Flores has the vision and the knowledge to continue to move South San Antonio ISD forward as a Destination District of Choice,” said Osteguin.

The Board spent 2-days interviewing candidates last week.

Trustee Edward Mungia added, “I think we are all very excited to welcome Dr. Flores to our South San Family.  I am very proud it was a unanimous vote today, and we look forward to working with him."

The superintendent position came open when the current superintendent, Dr. Abelardo Saavedra, announced his retirement.
