Parent Opt-Out Resource Challenges

Any parent of a South San Antonio ISD student, District employee, or resident of the District may file a formal challenge to an instructional resource utilized in the District’s educational program on the grounds of appropriateness.

When a complaint is received regarding the appropriateness of an instructional resource, the school shall attempt to resolve the matter informally by following the procedure below:

1. The principal or designee shall explain the school’s resource selection process, including the criteria used and the qualifications of the professional staff involved in selecting the challenged resource.
2. The principal or designee shall describe the intended educational purpose of the resource and provide any relevant information regarding its use.
3. If appropriate, the principal or designee may offer the concerned parent an alternative instructional resource for their child to use in place of the challenged material.
4. Should the complainant wish to pursue a formal challenge, the principal or designee shall provide a copy of this policy along with the appropriate form to initiate a formal reconsideration of the resource.

The complainant may appeal the decision of the reconsideration committee by following the appropriate complaint procedures, beginning with the designated administrator, as outlined in District policies DGBA, FNG, and GF.
