Bio de señor Cuellar,

My full name is Juan Francisco Cuellar, Jr. I am the oldest of my siblings, plus I am the oldest grandchild from my mother’s side of the family. I was born in Del Rio, Texas. I have lived in many places as a child and as an adult  before I settled down in San Antonio and called it my home.

I graduated from Del Rio High School in 1987 and joined the army at the end of that summer. I had the privilege to be stationed in Korea during the 1988 Olympics and afterwards I was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky with the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division. While stationed at Ft. Campbell the whole unit was shipped out to Panama where I became a Jungle Expert. When we returned, we were shipped out to Saudi Arabia and participated in the liberation of Kuwait and was part of the first unit that invaded Iraq during Desert Storm. Once again I had the privilege to be a part of history because we participate in the world’s largest air assault mission. Upon our safe arrival back to the U. S. and Ft. Campbell, KY, I decided to go to college.

I acquired my B. A. in Criminology from the University of Northern Iowa in 1997 and as soon as I could, I returned to Texas. When I returned to Del Rio (December 1997) I begin to look for a job in the criminology field, but to my surprise Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. hired me in the position of upper management. The job paid really well, but it was not my calling. At the end of my third year with Wal-Mart (and after I was awarded Store of the Year), I decided to return to the criminology field and started to work at the Bexar County Juvenile Detention Center (BCJDC). While working at BCJDC, I received my calling to become a teacher (God works in mysterious ways). At this point I applied at UTSA under the Post-Baccalaureate Program and was accepted. I completed my student teaching at Fox Tech High School in 2003. I taught at Floresville Middle School for four years (2004 to 2008), and I just started my fourth year at South San High School (going on my eighth year of teaching).

I have been asked if I have any regrets by not ever staying in my original field, but to my reward I have never looked back. I only wished that I had decided to teach 20 years ago. This would have saved me the hassle and money of acquiring my first B. A. Then again it’s like I was once told by one of the vice-principals that I worked for, “You don’t know where you would have gotten if you had not been where you’ve been”. At that point everything made a lot more sense why it took me so long to get here. I was destined to do this and this is why I decided to acquired my Masters degree in Administrative Leadership.

From this I learned that everything happens for a reason. Teaching is like second nature to me and it doesn’t even feel like a job. In turn, going to work in the mornings is even more enjoyable. With this being said and done, I acquired my M. A. in Educational Leadership in May of 2010; God only knows how much of a challenge it was. I don’t know what’s in store for me, but I do know that I will make a difference in someone’s life.
